This year’s IMSH was in Florida, a perfect place to be in January!

I led a workshop on simulation debriefing and cognitive errors. I had a great team of faculty, including Rebecca Minehart. M.D. (MGH) and Christine Park, M.D. (Northwestern), both incredible simulation educators.

We such an amazing group of healthcare professionals (both doctors and nurses) as well as a few pilots! They were so engaged and the time flew by – the staff practically had to kick us out. We heard lots of stories of diagnostic and behavioral errors, all rooted in subconscious processes. It was an enlightening discussion. One retired surgeon in particular told me it was very cathartic to understand and talk about his error in this way. He was nearly moved to tears.

Another big highlight for me was reconnecting with the geniuses at the Center for Medical Simulation in Boston, where I did my training. Dan Raemer, Jeff Cooper, Jenny Rudolph, May Pian-Smith, and Robert Simon are among the experts who really got me thinking about how we think and decide. CMS has had tremendous influence on my career, and I’m grateful for those relationships.
